“My name is Erika Gonzalez, and I would like to start off by telling you a little about my experience in trying to get the best care for my son. Michael, better known to his family and friends as Mikey, and his twin were born on January 24, 2006. Michael had a lot of complications as a newborn and required extra attention as he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis when he was just two weeks old.Mikey spent six months in the hospital and was identified as having significant brain damage.Due to this condition, Mikey was unable to eat using his mouth thus; he had to get a G-Button. During this time, he was also diagnosed with epilepsy which included uncontrollable seizures and he continues to experience them to this day.”For the first two and a half years of his life, we did not have any home health services.It was not until the medical treatment for his seizures progressed from diet and medications to injections, at the recommendation of his neurologist as the most effective means to treat Mikey’s seizures, did this need arise. This created a sense of urgency to find qualified nurses to give the injections to Mikey. The physician provided his authorization for us to receive home health nurses, as I was unfamiliar with how this process worked.”Prior to this point, I was always tired, stressed and unhappy.Sometimes you never know if there is something better out there until you actually have it or make the decision to change your way of thinking for the benefit of not only yourself, but for those around you that also depend on you. In my case, this was my husband and the other children.”Since I have signed up with Epic Medstaff Services, Inc., it has been like a burden being lifted off of my shoulders. I can rely on the entire staff from the office administrators to the nurses. They are all are hardworking, dedicated, caring and diligent in caring for my son and our family’s well-being. They take the time to make sure that we have everything we need to care for my son. “Our son has a condition which requires us to have a skilled qualified nursing 24 hours a day. He is 100% ventilator dependent and has been in this condition for over ten years. Throughout the years we have used several nursing agencies. to provide coverage and care for our son. We have had problems staffing our shifts with reliable nurses who could provide care and have practical knowledge of the ventilation equipment we use. We have used many home health agencies only to find they were unable to provide full (or even close to full) coverage or they did not have adequate training. Many of the agencies were only concerned with sending a nurse out to “cover the shift.” We had a high turnover rate and the condition of our son suffered. There was no consistency of personalized care.“Our son’s prognosis gave him 12 – 18 months. He is now 11 years old. We firmly believe he is doing so well because of the care he receives. It is extremely important for the nursing agencies to work with the primary caregivers and doctors. Many of the agencies we have used are reluctant to work with the primary caregivers.“We now have Epic MedStaff in our home. The last agency we used only provided about 60% coverage (that is about the norm for other agencies). Epic Health Services has provided 24 hour nursing 7 days a week since we transferred to them.
